Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek

5 Days Near Thimphu Moderate

The Dagala Trek, often called the “Thousand Lakes Trek,” is one of the most scenic and peaceful trekking routes in Bhutan. The trail passes through remote alpine landscapes filled with crystal-clear glacial lakes, yak pastures, forests, and panoramic Himalayan views. It is considered one of Bhutan’s hidden trekking gems because it is less crowded yet incredibly beautiful.

* Best Seasons: March–June and September–November
* Starting Point: Genekha or Chamgang near Thimphu
* Ending Point: Talakha or Chamgang

The trek follows ancient yak-herding trails across the Dagala mountain range south of Thimphu.

The Thousand Lakes

The main attraction is the large number of pristine high-altitude lakes spread across the alpine plateau. These lakes reflect the surrounding snow peaks and are considered sacred by local communities.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Paro to Genekha Village (2,800m)

Drive from Paro to the charming village of Genekha, the starting point of our trek. We’ll set up camp nearby and prepare for the ascent through oak and rhododendron forests.

Day 2

Genekha to Gur (3,290m)

A steady climb through forests. We’ll cross a high ridge before descending into the beautiful sub-tropical valley of Gur, famous for its wildflowers in spring.

Day 3

Gur to Labatama (4,300m)

Today features a spectacular ridge walk. We’ll pass several alpine lakes and yak herder camps, with stunning views of the Himalayan range and Mt. Kanchenjunga.

Day 4

Labatama to Panka (4,000m)

Crossing the Labajong pass at 4,400m, we’ll reach our campsite at Panka. The panoramic views of the high Himalayas are breathtaking throughout the day.

Day 5

Panka to Thimphu via Talakha

The final descent through pine forests leads us to the Talakha Monastery. After visiting the monastery, we drive to Thimphu, marking the end of our trek.
