Jomolhari High Altitude Trek
The Jomolhari Trek is one of the most famous and beautiful trekking routes in Bhutan. Named after the sacred mountain Jomolhari, the trek offers breathtaking Himalayan scenery, alpine meadows, glaciers, yak-herding villages, and deep spiritual experiences.
Trek Overview
* Duration: Usually 7–14 days
* Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
* Highest Altitude: Around 4,900–5,000 meters
* Best Seasons: April–June and September–November
* Starting Point: Often begins near Drugyel Dzong
* Ending Point: Commonly near Thimphu or Paro depending on the route
The trek passes through some of Bhutan’s most pristine Himalayan landscapes and is often considered the classic Bhutan trekking experience.

Mount Jomolhari
The sacred Mount Jomolhari rises to about 7,326 meters and dominates the landscape with its snow-covered pyramid shape. The mountain is regarded as the dwelling place of protective deities in Bhutanese culture.
Detailed Itinerary
Paro to Shana (2,850m)
Begin the trek at Drugyel Dzong. Hike through apple orchards and rice terraces along the Pa Chhu river.
Shana to Thangthangkha (3,610m)
Trek through pine and oak forests. Reach the campsite with spectacular views of Mt. Jomolhari peak.
Thangthangkha to Jangothang (4,080m)
Follow the river past small monasteries and yak settlements to the most beautiful base camp in the world.
Jangothang Halt
Explore the base camp. Optional hike to Tshophu lake or climb for closer views of Jomolhari and Jichu Drake.
Jangothang to Soi Yaksa (3,800m)
Cross the Bhonte La pass (4,890m). Descend through high-altitude meadows where blue sheep are commonly seen.
Soi Yaksa to Thombu Shong (4,180m)
Climb to Takhung La pass (4,520m) and descend into the wide grazing valley of Thombu Shong.
Thombu Shong to Shana (2,850m)
Cross Thombu La pass (4,380m) before a long descent back through the blue pine forests to Shana.
Shana to Paro
Finish the final leg of the trail and drive back to Paro for a relaxing evening and traditional Bhutanese bath.
